30th Anniversary Poster: You Can’t Take It With You

Antaeus produced this zany family comedy in 2012, and we're remembering the production with an original poster by Marci Chorpash!

Find out who’s really crazy when a pair of lovebirds bring their mismatched families together in Kaufman and Hart’s classic screwball comedy. The delightfully mad Sycamores celebrate independence, freedom from convention and merry mayhem, while the exacting Kirbys believe in rules, hard work and rigid organization.

When young Alice Sycamore falls in love with Tony Kirby, the two families are forced to sort out their differences and ultimately determine what’s really important in life. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, You Can’t Take It With You has been a perennial favorite for more than 70 years.

Remembering: You Can’t Take It With You

  • “The prolific and dedicated Antaeus Company proves the perfect partner to present this goofy tale about the world’s most endearingly unconventional family … Perhaps the most impressive thing about this production is how Bermingham has physically manipulated 17 game actors to dance, feed snakes, and pose in togas while explosions emanate from the basement and G-Men swoop in to arrest the lot. Creating this energetic theatrical magic on the deep, narrow stage of this converted storefront is an accomplishment in itself.” —Travis Michael Holder, Backstage
  • “Knee slappin’ gut bustin’ dang nabbit hilarious … a very well crafted, superbly directed, and magnificently acted comedy.” —Ron Irwin, Examiner
  • “The entire cast are harmoniously in tune and make divine music throughout under the steady and inventive hand of director Gigi Bermingham who remains totally loyal to Kaufman and Hart’s brilliant script.” —Don Grigware, Broadway World
  • “I love the diverse, colorful world of the Sycamore-Vanderhofs. They unconditionally accept absolutely everyone and are oblivious to social pressure and the harsher realities of life. When you enter their realm, you can just leave your troubles behind.” —Director Gigi Bermingham

Creating the Poster:

Initially, when creating this piece I was thinking of the many wonderful details and personalities in this play. Then, reflecting on conflicts many of us are faced with when deciding which path to take, all the details became chaotic. My plan became to illustrate the fundamental dispute and reminder that “you can’t take it with you.” So bottom line, I thought this poster called for something minimal and graphic.
